Kris Kieper creates needle-felted landscapes capturing the light and beauty of the North Woods.

Extended Artist Statement

Kris Kieper is a needle-felting fiber artist inspired by the wilderness of Minnesota's Gunflint Trail and North Shore. Through a process she calls Feltscaping—painting with layers of colored wool fiber—she recreates the fleeting light, weather, and quiet moments that make the North Woods unforgettable.

Using thousands of individually placed fibers and fine-gauge felting needles, Kris gradually builds depth, texture, and atmosphere rather than using traditional brushstrokes. Working primarily with fine merino wool and other natural fibers, she continually explores new ways to capture realism while revealing the unique character and warmth of wool.

Whether depicting a dramatic sunset, still water, or a moonlit forest, Kris hopes her work draws viewers into a landscape before they realize it isn't a painting or photograph. Each piece is an invitation to slow down, look closely, and reconnect with the beauty and quiet of the natural world.
