Evening's Long Light ‒ original wool needle felting by Kris Kieper, framed 16x16"

The photo inspiration behind this piece was captured seconds before sunset on November 1, 2022, after an unseasonably warm, calm evening of open-water fishing on Sea Gull Lake near the end of the Gunflint Trail on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The shoreline shows evidence of the 2007 Ham Lake wildfire, with tall white pine trunks still standing. When the sun is low on the horizon, light travels a greater distance through the atmosphere than when it's overhead, and the longer wavelengths of red, yellow, and orange become visible. Pink sunsets result from mixing red with white light, which occurs as light is scattered by fine particulates such as moisture or pollutants. Many fine, blended layers in varying shades of blue, pink, purple, yellow, white, and gray were used to create the sky, clouds, and their reflection on the water. The artwork is created by needle felting wool onto felt and mounted on a hand-painted 16" × 16" canvas, giving the finished piece a clean, seamless presentation. The backside of the piece offers an interesting view of the colored fibers as they were pushed through the canvas. Leaving the back of the piece exposed allows the wool fibers to breathe and minimizes moisture buildup. Wire hanging hardware is attached.
