Nearing Conjunction ‒ original wool needle felting by Kris Kieper, framed 12x12"

Nearing Conjunction is inspired by a photograph captured along Minnesota's Gunflint Trail near the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in late February 2023. Stepping out of an ice house after an evening of fishing, I looked up to find the Moon, Jupiter, and Venus suspended above the horizon, glowing against a deep blue sky with wisps of cloud and a luminous lunar halo. The piece explores the quiet wonder of those unexpected moments when nature reminds us to pause and look up. The stillness of a winter evening, the vastness of the night sky, and the rare alignment of celestial bodies created a scene that felt both fleeting and timeless. The artwork is created by needle felting wool onto felt and mounted on a hand-painted 12" × 12" canvas, giving the finished piece a clean, seamless presentation. The backside of the piece offers an interesting view of the colored fibers as they were pushed through the canvas. Leaving the back of the piece exposed allows the wool fibers to breathe and minimizes moisture buildup. Wire hanging hardware is attached.
