North Shore Artists League Goes Online

The impact of Covid-19 has been felt by the North Shore Artists League on both their ability to meet and the cancellation of art show opportunities and sales potential.  In response, the League took on two projects:  1)  to meet online via Zoom and 2)  to bring up a website so members could connect, have pop-up art shows and online sales.

The League met with Linda Jurek, Executive Director, of Visit Cook County and secured promotion into Greater Minnesota - but the League needed to manage their own directory of information.  A website seemed the obvious solution.  “In the time of Covid, “Plan B’s” are critical to any business”, says Kathy Fox Weinberg, founding member of the League.  “Knowing this, we broadened the website to include an Online Gallery and Shop for special events”.  Several of the juried artists and guest artists for Fall Art Along the Lake Open Studio 2020 are already placing their art into the online gallery as some studios either can’t be open or for personal health reasons.  Fox had received emergency funds from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council and from Springboard for the Arts and decided to commit the funds to both a Zoom account for League use and to the software to build out a multi-function website.  “It’s been a big task in a short amount of time”, says Fox, “but we are now ready for prime-time!”   Fox notes, “Any member can now have choices to sell online as well as promote their own art website or the galleries that represent them”.  The website is also a great communication tool for League members.

Future vision for the website includes sales of art, pop-up shows and fund raisers for the community, as well as online shows synchronized to live art gallery shows.  We also want to support the hobbyist or seasonal artist where managing their own website may not be necessary.

Visitors and local residents are encouraged to visit the The North Shore Artists League website at www.northshoreartistsleague.org.  Fox says, “You may just find that gift or art piece you have been looking for.”

The North Shore Artists League,“by artists for artists”, was organized in January, 2019.  The League currently represents over 65 artists and galleries who are inspired by Lake Superior, her geography and the culture of the North Shore Communities.  The mission of the League is to bring artists together with each other and with opportunities to inspire, create, learn and engage with this special place in which they create.  Self-declared artists of all fine art mediums and levels of experience who live in Cook and Lake Counties, The Grand Portage Ojibwe, and our Canadian friends are welcome.  For more information visit the website at www.northshoreartistsleague.org.

    Hello NSAL artists,

I want to remind everyone that there are lots of opportunities in the West End of Cook County for display and sales.  I was just contacted again by Lori Schaefer of Blue Fin who really wants artists' work/show for the fall but hasn't gotten any inquiries. She is ready to go.

Please see Call to Artists to find a list of opportunities and details.

The Violence Prevention Center is hosting The Art of Healing at the Johnson Heritage Post during January 2021. Would you please email the attached announcement and entry form to the members of your organization?  If you have questions, please contact the Violence Prevention Center at 218.387.1262 or hope4u@boreal.org .

    The Art of Healing

The Violence Prevention Center (VPC) is proud to announce its second Art of Healing event to be held in January 2021 at the Johnson Heritage Post art gallery in Grand Marais, MN.  Our first Art of Healing event could not have been possible without so many artists generously sharing their artwork and a part of their story with our community.

If you or someone you know has been affected by or subjected to domestic or sexual violence and has used art as a means to respond, explore, express, or heal from their experiences, we are inviting people to share their work at The Art of Healing art exhibit.

The Art of Healing is an important event in the VPC’s ongoing mission to serve individuals and families in Cook County affected by domestic and sexual violence and to act as a catalyst in building healthy relationships and developing a community where violence is not tolerated.  We thank those who have and will fulfill this mission through art.

As with our first event, art can be submitted anonymously by either a survivor of domestic and/or sexual violence or by those who support survivors.  There is also an option to sell art at this event. We are accepting a wide variety of art such as painting, drawing, sculpture, wood carving, jewelry, textiles, weaving, photography, written etc.

Please share this opportunity with anyone you think may be interested.  Art should be submitted by December 29th, 2020. Please see the attached submission form or contact the VPC for more info at hope4u@boreal.org or by calling 218-387-1262 or 218-387-1237.

    Sincerely,

VPC Staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers
